I can confirm that the problem persists in VLC 1.1.7, so this have to be solved somehow, just not by VLC I'm afraid. Make sure xdg-screensaver works correctly on your system, this is not VLC's problem anymore. It looks like the VLC team are pushing the problem to others, but I have no basis for if they are right or not. It seems that it is up to VLC guys to solve this issue and only thing we can do is - to wait. The workaround with "Disable screensaver" option checked doesn't work for me. I'm using KDE with PowerDevil (as power manager), of course. I have the same problem with VLC (from >= 1.1.5), but everything works fine with SMplayer. This didn't happen with VLC 1.1.4 so I'm wondering if you experience the same problem with the new version, and what the fix is. After upgrading to VLC 1.1.6 it seems to ignore the option "Inhibit the power management daemon during playback" so my monitor goes to sleep after a while, which is pretty frustrating!
